Preparing for WS2017

Our 'high technology digital weighing system'

Our ‘high technology digital weighing system’

In preparation for WS2017 a number of team members loaded equipment into the EDSFAT Ambulance Support Unit today. Firstly the weight of all the equipment was checked using our high technology digital weighing system. Once weighed and packed, it was loaded and secured into the rear of the ASU.

The ASU’s New Doors

Completed by Barry and Brian

Thanks to Barry and Brian, the side doors of the Ambulance Support Unit have been replaced. As many of you will be aware, the old side doors had reached the end of their life. Barry and Brian removed the old doors, fitted the new ones and updated the securing and locking systems. This has improved both the security and the looks of the vehicles.

EDSFAT approved as a training centre

PrintEDSFAT has this week been approved as a QUALSAFE training centre, this means we can award externally recognised training courses overseen by OFQUAL and add credits to your individual learner profiles. These credits can help in employment or applications to education!

Keep your eyes peeled for details of courses.

New Monitoring Equipment

EDSFAT has this week taken delivery of a used Lifepak 12 patient monitor and defibrillator. The Lifepak 12 has been the mainstay of ambulance monitoring for quite a few years now, so successful that Physio Control have released an updated version (Lifepak 15). This has meant that we have been able to purchase a lifepak 12 at a very reasonable price. Whilst it is a few years old it is still very serviceable and the settings are so adjustable we have already been able to set it up to the latest CPR protocols.

Another way that we are pushing forward our clinical equipment and providing even better service to scouting.

BNI 2016

The May bank holiday saw a number of the team at the 20th BNI scout competition at Hamlet Wood in Maidstone. The team enacted a cycling accident to allow the scout teams to treat them and be assessed on their first aid skills. They are very grateful to Roger Whittle and his team for organising a great weekend, and allowing them an outlet for their questionable acting skills.

While none of the performances were likely to attract the attention of the Oscar awards committee, they did learn that lycra on a groundsheet on an incline doesn’t provide enough friction to prevent you from sliding uncontrollably down hill, and that the ResusciAnne  currently wears a child’s tracksuit and cycling helmet size 8-10.

Next year, the West End. Or at least Downe campsite for a repeat performance.

Gilwell Reunion 2015

Gilwell

Members of the EDSFAT team attended the 89th Gilwell Reunion On Saturday 5th September and Sunday 6th September.

Saturday 5th September

During Saturday Robert had organised EDSFAT’s ever popular High Visibility sales base and tombola.   As in previous years many people came over to see the various high visibility garments and badges available.  As various other road safety items including custom magnetic badges were available and  very large number of these products are exclusively supplied by EDSFAT, some customers come back year after year to buy items from us.  This year the team also had a large number of Marked and Blank Badges as well as various belt pouches.

At the same time Matt and a number of other team members were running a base covering various resuscitation messages and reminders.  With the focus being Statman, there was a good deal of interest.  The EDSFAT staff members were joined by Magda, a friend of the team who is a member of the scout movement in Poland.  Magda is actively involved in the pre-hospital environment as a 112 operator.

Sunday 6th September

Again on Sunday EDSFAT had two different bases at the Reunion.  Matt and Ian had a training and familiarisation base in the CIC foyer.  With Statman and a number of different resuscitation manikins available, the participants had the opportunity to practice using AEDs Whilst there had been published times for the session, most people ‘just dropped in’ as they walked by.  There were a number of visitors with different reasons for attending.  Two groups want to add the use of AEDs to their First Response courses; others were keen to get a better understanding of the operation of an AED and one gentleman had been concerned if he needed to use the  AED at his place of work he could do harm.  Whilst he was concerned about using the AED, he did not want to ask anyone.  After the session he confirmed if the need was ever to arise, he will now be happy to use it.

At the same time Robert, Brian, Oliver, Andy and Helen were running a sales and fundraising base.  Robert also gave away massive amounts of Retro-reflective and combined performance road safety material for people to use at scouting events.  EDSFAT continued to promote the use of High Visibility garments and jackets.
